A Pharma Payment A Day Keeps Docs’ Finances Okay

Search for your physician.All told, 29 different pharmaceutical companies paid her $594,363 in 2014, mostly for promotional speaking and consulting, but also for travel expenses and meals, according to data released Tuesday detailing payments by drug and device companies to U.S. doctors and teaching hospitals. (You can search for your doctor on ProPublica’s updated Dollars for Docs interactive database.)Stankovic’s earnings were certainly high, ranking her about 250th among 606,000 doctors who received payments nationwide last year. What was more remarkable, though, was that she received payments on 242 different days — nearly every workday of last year.Reached by telephone Tuesday, Stankovic declined to comment. On her LinkedIn page, Stankovic lists herself as vice chief of staff at Parkland Medical Center HCA Inc. in Derry, New Hampshire, and as medical director of peritoneal dialysis at DaVita Inc., also in Derry.That doctors receive big money from the pharmaceutical industry is no surprise. The new data released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services shows that such interactions are widespread, with not only doctors, but thousands of dentists, optometrists, podiatrists and chiropractors receiving at least one industry payment from August 2013 to December 2014.What is being seen for the first time now is how ingrained pharmaceutical companies and their sales reps are in the lives of those who write prescriptions for their products. A ProPublica analysis found that 768 doctors received payments on more than half of the days in 2014. More than 14,600 doctors received payments on at least 100 days in 2014.Take Juichih Hsu, a Maryland doctor whose specialty is family medicine. She received payments on 286 days of 365, more than anyone else. Sometimes, she received meals from several drug companies on the same day. Hsu’s payments totaled $5,959 in 2014. She declined to comment when reached on Tuesday.“There are physician practices which have very deep relationships with pharmaceutical representatives, where they are a very integral part of the practice,” said Dr. Aaron Kesselheim, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School who has written about industry relationships with doctors. “Every day it’s another drug company coming in for a lunch. Sometimes it may be some drug companies are bringing breakfast and some are bringing lunch and it’s just part of the culture of the practice.”Sometimes there may be more at work than that.Source: Centers for Medicare and Medicaid ServicesGraphic by: Cecilia Reyes/ProPublicaThe doctor with the second-highest number of interactions with drug and device reps, John Fritz, of Jersey City, N.J., logged payments on 256 days last year. His payments totaled $232,003. Fritz was indicted in June for referring patients to a medical imaging company from 2006 to 2013 in exchange for about $500,000 in kickbacks. He was charged with fraud and bribery, according to a release from the state attorney general’s office. A woman who answered the phone at his office on Tuesday said he declined to comment.Kesselheim said that to have such extensive contact with industry reps can indicate that doctors are getting their information about the drugs they prescribe from the companies that make them, and not from impartial sources. “There’s good evidence that that affects prescribing practices and physician behavior.”The drugs for which Stankovic received the most money to promote are costly. One, H.P. Acthar Gel, cost an average of nearly $39,000 a prescription, Medicare data from 2013 shows, and experts say there’s little evidence it works better than less expensive drugs. Another drug, Soliris, for which Stankovic received promotional payments is among the most expensive drugs in the world but is considered highly effective in treating serious kidney disease.ProPublica’s analysis turned up big differences in the number of industry interactions among physicians in different specialties. On average, doctors who received payments interacted with drug and device companies on 14 days last year, receiving an average of $3,325 in total.The nation’s 3,900 rheumatologists in the data averaged 40 days of interactions with drug and device companies, more than doctors in any other large specialty. They were followed closely by endocrinologists, electrophysiologists and interventional cardiologists. On the other end of the spectrum, dentists, chiropractors, neonatologists and pathologists had among the fewest interactions with drug and device makers.Some of the doctors who had the highest number of interactions were those ProPublica has previously identified as having high rates of brand-name prescribing in Medicare’s prescription drug program, known as Part D. Others have been mentioned in previous ProPublica stories about doctors who have received large payments from the drug industry. A number of experts, including Kesselheim, note that payments from industry may influence physicians’ choice of drugs.A spokeswoman for the pharmaceutical industry said in a statement that company interactions with doctors are important.“Collaboration between physicians and biopharmaceutical professionals is critical to improving the health and quality of life of patients,” the statement from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America said. “Clinical trials sponsored by biopharmaceutical companies have led to life-saving breakthroughs for people suffering from cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Physicians also provide real-world insights and valuable feedback to companies about their medicines to improve patient care. Educating the public about the nature of these collaborations helps patients understand in which ways these interactions can improve both their health and medical innovation.”ProPublica has been tracking industry payments to doctors since 2010. Our Dollars for Docs interactive database allowed people to search payments made by 17 companies between 2009 and 2013. Most of those companies were required to report their payments as a condition of legal settlements with the federal government.The data released Tuesday radically expands the amount of data available to patients — and ProPublica has overhauled Dollars for Docs to include these payments. The Physician Payment Sunshine Act, a part of the 2010 Affordable Care Act, mandated that all drug and device companies publicly report payments to doctors. The transparency effort is called Open Payments.The government initially released some data last fall, covering the period of August to December 2013, but it was significantly redacted because of data inconsistencies. The data released Tuesday covers the period of August 2013 to December 2014. The data inconsistencies have been resolved.All told, 1,617 companies reported 15.7 million payments valued at $9.9 billion. Nearly all of those payments — 14.9 million — were classified as “general payments,” covering promotional speaking, consulting, meals, travel and royalties. The government has tightened the rules for reporting such continuing education in the future.From August 2013 to December 2014, Genentech Inc. spent the most on general payments, $387.7 million, mostly royalties for its drugs Rituxan, Avastin and Herceptin to City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California. That was four times more than the second-ranked company, DePuy Synthes Products LLC, which spent $94.7 million, nearly all on royalties. Topera Inc., a small medical device company, came in third, with $93.1 million, almost exclusively acquisition payments to its physician founders from device maker Abbott Laboratories.Among other pharmaceutical companies, AstraZeneca spent the most on general payments ($90.9 million), followed by Pfizer ($82.1 million) and Allergan ($70.7 million). In a statement, AstraZeneca said that it believes “it is important to be open about the way we conduct our business and how we help people through our medicines and programs. We are committed to the highest standards of conduct in all of our operations, including how we partner with physicians and medical institutions.”Royalty fees, though few in number, accounted for $803.5 million in general payment spending in 2014, more than any other category. They were followed by promotional speaking ($632.4 million) and consulting ($369.4 million). Her three-pointer with 0.1 seconds left lifted to the Fighting Irish to a 61-58 victory over Mississippi State.For those who don’t follow women’s college hoops closely, here are a few things to know about the junior from Milwaukee.Her first name derives from her father’s Nigeria, and she’s the youngest of Yolanda and Gregory Ogunbowale’s three kids, according to Notre Dame. Yolanda was a pitcher on the DePaul University softball team and Gregory played soccer and rugby, later serving in the Nigerian Army. Yolanda was Arike’s grade-school basketball coach.Her older brother, Oluwadare or Dare, was a running back at the University of Wisconsin and signed as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans in 2017. He has since been an offseason/practice squad acquisition of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Redskins.Her cousin, Diamond Stone, plays in the NBA’s G League and played for one season at the University of Maryland.Ogunbowale was a pretty good club soccer player, too, on teams that won four Wisconsin State Cup championships (Lake Country United, 2010-12, and FC Milwaukee, 2009.) But basketball was her focus, and she dominated, averaging better than 27 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals as a senior at Divine Savior Holy Angels, an all-girls Catholic school in Milwaukee. The Dashers went 26-2 and won their first Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association title that season, when she was chosen for the McDonald’s all-American Game.“I think she will be remembered as the greatest female player in the state of Wisconsin,” her high school coach, Jeff Worzella, wrote in an email to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “She plays the game at such a high level at times. I just sat there on the sidelines and was simply amazed at what she could do on the basketball floor.”In addition to Notre Dame, Arike’s college choices came down to UCLA, Louisville, Ohio State and Wisconsin, but she chose Notre Dame because of her faith.“I’ve been going to religious schools my whole life,” the 5-foot-8 guard said in the fall of 2014. “I went to a Lutheran grade school and a Catholic high school. I wanted to keep my faith base strong. “It’s a great school, Hall of Fame coach [Muffet McGraw], great academics. I wanted to go into business and they have the No. 1 business school. It’s an all-around great system.”She and Stone grew up in the same neighborhood and often played against one another.“We treated her like one of the boys,” Stone said. “She didn’t get any calls. She played hard. She’d get right back up. She had that toughness. I think that’s why she’s so successful right now.”She has often credited that background with her success.“I had to be confident. I couldn’t be scared. They treated me like one of them, so I think I just always had it in me,” she told the South Bend Tribune, when asked about playing against her brothers and other boys as a kid.For her parents, other things matter most.“The thing people tell us most about her is what a great person she is,” Gregory Ogunbowale said in 2014. “That’s more important to us than basketball. She’s always gone to religious schools, and she wanted to continue with that flavor. We’re blessed that she is. We know that she’s going to be a girl with values, and that’s more important to us.”She averaged 11.4 points as a freshman at Notre Dame, the most for a Fighting Irish reserve in more than a decade. By her sophomore season she was a starter, averaging 15.9 points per game, 10th in the ACC, and scoring a career-high 32 points with nine rebounds in a Sweet 16 win over Ohio State. She became a national star this season, ranking in the top 20 in scoring with nearly 21 points a game and earning first-team all-ACC and second-team all-American honors. Her NCAA tournament star turn came during the best stretch of her career; she scored at least 20 points in five straight games culminating with the national semifinal, then finished with 18 points in the championship game.“She’s fearless,” Coach Muffet McGraw told the South Bend Tribune during the regular season. “She doesn’t mind if she misses a few shots. She’s going to keep taking it, which is what you need. #HackJozi – New ideas to feed South Africa’s digital economy

first_imgThe top three most innovative digital ideas in the 2016 #HackJozi Challenge wereannounced in Johannesburg in late May, marking the end of an intensive six-weekboot camp for aspiring South African tech entrepreneurs.This year’s winner was Neo Hutiri, founder of Technovera, whose smart lockers cutthe time patients have to wait when collecting chronic medication at clinics fromseveral hours to just a few minutes.Placed second was a multidisciplinary team behind Tuta-Me, a mobile applicationconnecting qualified tutors and students, enabling students to receive one-on-onetutoring while helping tutors earn additional income.Third place went to Lomile Mokoka, an architect who developed eSubmit, an online platform for submitting building plan applications to municipalities.The winner gets R1-million in funding to fully develop the idea, while the two runners up each receive R350 000.#HackJozi is a collaboration between Wits University’s Joburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE) and the Johannesburg municipal government, designed to accelerate early stage ICT start-ups. Three winners were chosen from a shortlist of 10 finalists who best used technology to solve everyday problems.Professor Barry Dwolatzky, director of the JCSE, said the competition helped buildskills in South African ICT. Review: The Illuminati — A Hands-Free Light Meter

first_imgThere are many benefits to having a light meter. There are even more benefits to a light meter that is also a color meter you can read on your phone.This year at NAB, I came across a booth for a company called Illuminati. They were not a secret underground organization trying to impose a new world order — as their name might suggest — but rather a nice group of folks who have created what just might be my favorite new light/color meter.After a very successful kickstarter campaign, the Illuminati light meter has been out for a bit now, and it works great. I hadn’t heard of it myself until I found them at NAB, and let me be clear, this is not a sponsored post. I bought one for myself about 30 seconds in as they were explaining its functionality to me.At a price point well below most of the competition (usually in the $500 range — or much higher), with both a color meter and an incident-style light meter, this was too good to pass up.This particular meter has a very interesting form factor. I’m not sure how intentional the triangle shape was in relation to the company’s name, but the humor is not lost on me. However, the shape is actually quite functional.The meter itself is made of plastic and features a few little LEDs that flash to signify a successful bluetooth pairing (and other various bits of information). However, you can turn this light off if you don’t want it affecting your shot.A nice little magnetic kickstand comes with the meter — as well as a magnetic back that you can use to attach the device to your shirt or a lanyard. Both are very strong and work great.My favorite aspect of this little light meter is that you can leave it in the scene as you light. I tend to work as a one- or two-man band most of the time, and this device allows me to alter my light intensities and contrast ratios while looking at my phone and dialing in the exact look that I want. Of course, being able to do this without walking back and forth and taking readings is a great thing.The AppThe app has a great dashboard-type screen where you can add or remove meters based on the information that you’d like to see. All at once, you can keep tabs on a video light exposure meter, stills-style light exposure meter, color temperature, and chromaticity. You can even set an alarm in this screen.Each of these will update simultaneously based on the light hitting the meter.You can easily switch between a stills exposure meter or a video exposure meter with the touch of a button. This will switch between a shutter speed readout or a shutter angle readout.In the video meter, you can also change the frame-rate, as well as add ND filter amounts. All of this is super helpful.Perhaps my favorite part of the app is the remarkable color temperature meter. This addition to an already-affordable meter was the main selling point for me.The meter gives you a graph of the current color temperature of your light. However, it also contains presets of nearly every major lighting gel company that will provide new nodes on the graph, showing you what change in color temperature would result from using that particular gel.  For instance, you’ll know how far a full CTB (color temperature blue) will push your light before you ever put it on the light itself.The app also includes chromaticity, which is a great tool for measuring the quality of the light hitting the meter.Now you no longer need to rely on camera tests and manufacturer information to tell you the lux and footcandles of the lights that you’re using. You can also keep track of the magenta and green shift.No more fretting over CRI. You’ll know exactly how to correct your lights for magenta or green shift.If you’re in the market for a light meter, I strongly suggest this one — especially if you’re just learning how and why to use them and you want something good to start with. However, this meter is a great option for beginners and experts alike.So far, it seems to do everything I need a light meter to do — with the added benefits bluetooth-capability and a robust color meter.Looking for more industry news? 4 Battle-Tested Strategies That Create a Competitive Advantage

first_imgThe following sales strategies are generally underrated, overlooked, or ignored. In some cases, they are highly unpopular in a world that is enamored with transactions, immediate gratification, and technologies that promise efficiency, a promise that is mostly a lie. These four strategies are also battle-tested, which is to say, have passed the test and created a competitive advantage.When you sell, you are trying to create a preference to work with you and your team, excluding your competition. What I mean when I write about value creation is your approach, your strategy, and your ability to be consultative.Shaping the Client’s ViewSadly, the sales profession is falling behind when it comes to shaping the client’s view of their problem and the potential solutions. Those who struggle still hold on to the belief that they are going to win large, complex B2B sales by relying on their company’s reputation and their solution. While these things may provide some small benefit, they do nothing to shape the prospective client’s understanding of their problem, what exactly they should do about it, or how they should go about changing.You shape the primary question the client is asking by providing context that modifies the lens through which they view their problem, challenge, or opportunity (see Eat Their Lunch, Chapter 2) Can you help them make sense of their world and their business? Can you help them understand what their choices are and why they should choose one course of action over others?Win customers away from your competition. Check out Eat Their LunchWe resist doing hard things.Having a Physical PresenceMost salespeople—and the sales organizations for whom they work—are not interested in the strategy of showing up. The desire to be efficient with time, our changing communication preferences, and our desire to transact (i.e.,, has salespeople mistakenly believing they can have the sales conversation over email.At the very time I am writing these words, a salesperson I know has a scheduled meeting with a prospect in their prospect’s home office. She is meeting with them on her vacation. No one else competing for this business will have visited the client in their home office. What do you believe her chances of winning might be?There is a tremendous competitive advantage to having a physical presence. You show you care enough to come and learn about the client and their needs. You get to meet the people who are making the decision, and you get to understand what they want from you. Even more, they get to see you writing down what they say, an indication that you are going to try to give them what they want.The approach here is the opposite of what we might describe as the pen pal theory of selling.Stealing TimeThis approach is underrated, and mainly because there is little will to have a physical presence. Your prospective client is going to spend time with a few salespeople or sales organizations. Unless you are in an RFP and limited to one hour to sell (strategy here), you are competing for time.My friends at Gartner shared with me that buyers spend something like 18% of their time working on a purchase with salespeople. Generally, each sales organization gets something like 6% of their time. The more time you command, the more time you have to sell effectively and create a preference to work with you.In all things, you want an asymmetrical advantage. If you could double the time you spend with the client, you create a competitive advantage. You might also limit the time they have for your competitors. The strategy here is very much like clock management in a football game; if I have the control of the ball, I can keep you on defense and prevent you from scoring.Defining or Revising the ProcessWho controls the process wins. The book is practical and tactical, even if the word “closing” frightens people into believing it is an old school, Glengarry Glenn Ross approach (it is, in fact, quite the opposite).No more pushy sales tactics. The Lost Art of Closing shows you how to proactively lead your customer and close your sales. When you are selling, you are helping your prospective client with a better outcome. Much of the time, they don’t know what they need to do or why they need to do it. So, they skip some of the commitments. They try to accelerate the process by having a single meeting and asking for a proposal, even though there are other conversations and decisions they need to have first.The person who can define the process—or revise it—creates a competitive advantage. If your competitors are not having the same conversations and are operating from a model that suggests they follow the client’s lead, you create a gap between their experience with you and their experience with your competition.Executing the 4 StrategiesIt is unlikely that these strategies conflict with your sales process. Nor will they lessen the effectiveness of any of your sales methodologies. You won’t hear complaints from your sales manager (with the execution of a more considerable expense report from trips to meet clients), nor will your dream clients gripe about you spending time with them or helping them solve their problems.What’s difficult about these strategies is changing your behaviors and doing the work.
