Taking it one day at a time

first_imgUndefeated junior 400-metre hurdler Shannon Kalawan is taking her breakthrough season one day at a time, according to Edwin Allen Comprehensive High hurdles coach Kirk Douglas. In the weeks to come, Douglas will be helping Kalawan to improve, with the World Junior Championships her main target. Success at those meets would add to the ISSA Boys and Girls’ Championships and Carifta gold medals she has already collected.Asked to explain her progress from a personal best of 58.93 seconds to her Carifta Games winning time of 56.29, Douglas said: “I don’t think she has run a clean race yet, which we will work on at least for the World Juniors, hopefully.”Injury interrupted progressIn an exclusive interview, he noted that an injury interrupted her progress after she had been the runner-up at Champs 2014.”Last year, she started well, but she got hurt, and that’s what people don’t remember,” he recalled.A string of lifetime-best clockings – from 57.20 at Central Championships to 56.80 at Carifta Trials, to 56.41 at Champs – had observers wondering if Kalawan could also qualify for the Jamaican Olympic team.Douglas, once a star hurdler and coach at Kingston College, isn’t counting that out. “I don’t put it out of reach but we’re just going to take it one day at a time,” he said. “We have to look at these three weeks to Penns and then a six-week programme to the Junior Trials.”Kalawan is only 0.09 from the Olympic qualifying standard of 56.20 seconds.”Of course,” he concluded on the matter of the Olympics, “the thing there is two weeks later, so she can race again at the Senior Trials.”The National Junior Championships is set for June 18 and 19, with the four-day National Seniors starting on June 30.It’s a fair bet that the 18-year-old Edwin Allen student athlete will improve in alternating lead legs by then.”We’ve been working on using the ‘weak’ lead leg, if you can call it that,” he related. “So if you notice, she doesn’t really panic.”Kalawan has taken her new found success in her stride and according to Douglas, “has been a dream to coach all season just because of her attitude”.She is the latest in a long line of successful 400-metre hurdlers nurtured by head coach Michael Dyke and directed by Douglas.During his 13-year tenure as hurdles coach at Edwin Allen, the school has taken the Champs gold medal seven times through Sherene Pinnock, Nikita and Ristananna Tracey, Camira Haughton, and Kalawan. Pinnock, a two-time World Junior bronze medal winner, and Andrea Sutherland in 2006, and Nikita and Ristananna in 2009 and 2010, gave Dyke’s team one-two finishes at Champs.Ristananna has the Champs record at 55.81 seconds.last_img read more

Erli Bird: A Startup Connecting Other Startups With Early Adopters

first_imgtim devaney and tom stein China and America want the AI Prize Title: Who … What Nobody Teaches You About Getting Your Star… Tags:#social media#startups How OKR’s Completely Transformed Our Culturecenter_img Related Posts Don’t listen to customers, develop your products in secret and make every decision yourself. This approach worked for Steve Jobs. But it won’t work for your startup because you’re not Steve Jobs. (Heck, even Steve Jobs wasn’t Steve Jobs.)If you want to succeed today, you need to put your product out on the market, collect user feedback and keep tweaking it to make sure you’ve got a winner. You Can’t Trust Your FamilyTo do that, you need to attract early adopters, people who will sample your product or service and tell you what they think. No, not just your immediate family and Facebook friends. Real customers, users who will test-drive what you’re selling and give you an honest assessment. They’re vital. They’ll keep you from traveling down dead-end avenues and save you a lot of time and money. The problem is finding them. Erli Bird is working to solve that problem.Erli Bird is a website where beta users can discover new startups, try their products and give feedback. It works for startups, because you get customer insight to keep you on course. And it works for users, because they get to check out your cool new product, provide constructive criticism and brag to their friends that they’re helping to develop it. (Early adopters… You know the type.)Failure Is A Good Teacher“The idea came out of an experience this spring when I applied for a spot in Y Combinator,” says Erli Bird founder Mike Siegler. His startup at the time was a dating site based on the Pinterest concept and “it was not very good,” Siegler admits. He was rejected. But he was inspired. How about a startup that doesn’t solve a problem for customers but one that solves a fundamental problem for other startups?Erli Bird showcases about seven new startups on its homepage every few weeks. It offers slots for early adopters to sign up and test the products. In return for their participation, users earn points that they can redeem for products from other startups. Neat.“I’ve founded a number of companies,” Siegler says, “and I always thought there should be a service where you could get early users to test out your site and tell you what they think. Some of the startups I launched in the past, I had no idea what I was doing. I would spend time and money on development and get it out there and then nobody would use it.”There was his dating site. There was a logo-design marketplace. There was a social network for oenophiles called Wine McGee. All of them went sour.Finding Feedback Loops“My biggest problem was just getting my product in front of people,” Siegler says. “Even getting in front of 100 people is hugely beneficial. And feedback – without a formal feedback mechanism most people will not tell you what they think, won’t say, ‘Hey, I don’t understand this tab on your site,’ or, ‘This button should be on the left side, not the right side.’”Erli Bird is an inexpensive way for startups to gather this valuable information. Wahooly, for example, takes a piece of equity before it matches your startup to 5,000 “brand advocates” or social media influencers. BetaBait is free, but the email-based diretory service doesn’t provide direct feedback tools.Erli Bird has a freemium option that connects your startup with around 100 beta users for free. You can connect with more for a fee, which Siegler wants to keep low to avoid the appearance that he’s selling users.Erli Bird launched in June and now has 70 startups participating. They include Glyder, an iPhone app for small businesses built by a Zynga designer and an OpenTable cofounder, and Capriza, which lets users make their own mobile apps in less than three minutes. Erli Bird has a Kickstarter feel, with a window where the early adopters can meet the company founders.“You’re creating a product and maybe this is your first time in front of customers,” Siegler says, “but you will get honest feedback and know what you need to do to change course a lot sooner than you would have before – and in the process save a lot of time and money and, ultimately, have a much more successful company.”Image courtesy of Shutterstock. Will your connected range think your turkey is too dry?

first_imgWhy IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Tags:#Alexa#GE Appliances#Geneva#Internet of Things#IoT#Thanksgiving There is a lot of preparation that goes into Thanksgiving Day, and oftentimes the amount of focus involved in cooking takes away from the special time with family and friends.  Imagine getting to spend more time relaxing, and less time checking on the turkey. There is more to be thankful for this year, with GE Appliances recently integrating Amazon Alexa skill sets into their smart appliances, right in time for the holidays. Now you could have your own personal sous chef, just by talking to your oven!Whether owners want to preheat the oven or check the internal temperature while food is cooking, all they have to do is speak the command to make it happen.  The Alexa skill created for GE Appliances and Monogram products has a special name: “Geneva.”Introduced in September, GE Appliances is the first to offer Alexa skill to manage a vast range of kitchen appliances that includes wall ovens, ranges, refrigerators, dishwashers and laundry, among other things. Now you can watch the game and get dinner rightBy speaking the command, “Alexa, tell Geneva to preheat my oven for turkey,” Geneva’s functions can assist with finding and setting the preferred cooking mode for your greatest turkey yet. Geneva can also provide useful tips.  For example, it can prompt you to make sure that your turkey is placed in the center of the oven. Also part of the skill-set is the connected oven meat probe. Just by issuing the command, “Alexa, ask Geneva for oven status,” Geneva can inform you if your oven is preheating or has reached the correct temperature, what mode it is in and the temperature of the meet probe inside of the turkey. Having an attached meat probe lowers the risk of incorrectly cooking the turkey which can cause it to be too dry or not cooked enough. To add to the fun of the holidays, Geneva even throws in some cheery greetings such as, “Happy Thanksgiving Day,” and “Gobble Gobble” when you talk to it while in the kitchen preparing for the big meal. IPL 2011: Mumbai Indians vs Kochi Tuskers Kerala- KTK win by 8 wkts

first_imgSachin Tendulkar scored an unbeaten century, but his team Mumbai Indian ended up losing the match to Kochi by 8 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday. Score | PhotosChasing 183, Kochi opener Brendon McCullum and captain Mahela Jayawardene put on 128 runs for the first wicket that set the pace of things to come.McCullum and Jayawardene knew that 183 would prove to be tough target and so they started going at the oppostion bowlers right away, keeping the run rate around 9 an over. The two walloped the opposition bowlers. Pacers or spinners, no one was spared even the Sri lankan slinger Lasith Malinga found it difficult to contain them and was hit for runs. Finally, it was Malinga’s famous yorker that did the trick, it entered the bat-pad gate of his Sri lankan team-mate Mahela Jayawrdene and crashed into the middle stump. Jayawardene fell for 56 and Kochi lost him on 128/1.In 17th over Malinga got another reason to cheer when he bowled McCullum on 81 and brought back Mumbai back into the game which was gradually slipping away from their grasp. Kochi were 156/2 at the stage. But Ravindra Jadeja had other plans, he hit two sixes in the 19th over off left-arm spinner Ali Murtaza and Kochi won the match by a good 8-wicket margin.Mumbai inningsMumbai captain and opener Sachin Tendulkar scored a unbeaten ton as Mumbai put on an impressive 182/2 in 20 overs.Mumbai captain Sachin Tendulkar got off to a flyer after he was put to bat by oppostion captain Mahela Jayawardene, who won the toss. And the Master Blaster had South African Davy Jacobs by his side. The two got busy smashing the oppostion bowlers across the park.advertisementBut Raiphi Gomez got the breakthrough in the 9th over when his ball rattled Jacobs stumps when he was on 12 and Mumbai on 61. However, the wicket did little damage to Mumbai as Tendulkar was still in the middle and was clearly on song.Tendulkar and Rayudu, who were instrumental in Mumbai win against Bangalore on Tuesday, once again got on with a fine partnership. In the last over Rayudu got run out, while trying to save Tendulkar, who was batting on 90’s. And on the last ball of the 20th over Tendulkar completed his ton, with West Indian Kieron Pollard by his side. The Master Blaster carried his bat through to score an unbeaten 100 that came off 66 balls and included 12 fours and three over the fence shots.last_img read more

Luke Walton out as Lakers coach after 3 losing seasons

first_imgPhilippine Arena Interchange inaugurated Ethel Booba twits Mocha over 2 toilets in one cubicle at SEA Games venue The former Lakers forward went 98-148 after getting his first permanent head coaching job with the 16-time NBA champions. The former Golden State assistant never led the Lakers to the playoffs, not even after the arrival of LeBron James last summer.Walton leaves three days after the Lakers’ final game of their 37-45 season was upstaged by the shocking pregame resignation of Johnson, who inherited Walton when he took over the Lakers’ front office in February 2017. Johnson attributed his decision in part to his desire and reluctance to fire Walton, who is close to Lakers owner Jeanie Buss.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSPalace wants Cayetano’s PHISGOC Foundation probed over corruption chargesSPORTSSingapore latest to raise issue on SEA Games food, logisticsA potential power struggle instead ended with both men out of their jobs after this wild week. Pelinka, who was hired along with Johnson, announced the move in a possible sign of the increased organizational power of Kobe Bryant’s former agent.“I want to thank Jeanie Buss and the Buss family for giving me the opportunity to coach the Lakers,” Walton said in a statement issued by the Lakers. “This franchise and the city will always be special to me and my family.” Walton was tasked with one of the most difficult jobs in the NBA this season. Johnson and Pelinka gave him an oddly constructed roster of idiosyncratic NBA veterans on one-year deals playing alongside James and several talented youngsters including Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart.Walton’s Lakers also were rattled by Johnson’s midseason pursuit of disgruntled New Orleans forward Anthony Davis in a trade that would have resulted in a complete roster upheaval. Several Lakers acknowledged the shadowy pursuit’s impact on their play.“It affected us a lot,” guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope said. “Once the trade talk was there, the locker room changed. Everybody was pretty much worried about that, especially guys that haven’t been through it. They were worried where they were going to end up.”James and the Lakers’ players have been uniformly supportive of Walton, who managed to keep his team playing hard and harmoniously under the Los Angeles microscope despite multiple major injuries and distractions. Walton just couldn’t coax enough wins out of the Lakers, who ruined their second-half playoff hopes with confounding losses to bottom-dwellers New York and Phoenix.“Want to thank Luke and the rest of the coaching staff for allowing me to be me from day 1,” Kuzma tweeted. “They say opportunity is everything in the league and they gave me that right from the jump.”Not many Lakers observers questioned Walton’s man-management abilities, but his tactical acumen was widely criticized. Johnson and many fans had problems with everything from Walton’s playing time decisions and curious rotations to his reported reluctance to add new assistants with fresh perspectives to his bench.Despite everything, the Lakers went 15-8 in their 23 games with James, Ingram and Ball all healthy. Buss decided not to find out whether Walton could continue that progress in the fall with renewed health and a high draft pick this summer. The Lakers’ next coach will be their sixth since the retirement of Phil Jackson in 2011. Walton’s 246 games in charge were the most by any coach in the tumultuous near-decade since the franchise’s last championship in 2010.Ex-Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue, the former Lakers guard, already has been frequently mentioned as a potential replacement for Walton due to his obvious ties to James. Walton stepped in as Golden State’s interim coach when Kerr was sidelined by health issues to start the 2015-16 season, and he led the Warriors to a 24-0 start and a 39-4 record before Kerr returned to the bench.“They’re losing one of the best human beings in the NBA. They’re losing a guy who knows the game as well as anybody I’ve ever met,” Kerr said Friday in Oakland. “They’re losing somebody who players believe in, players want to play for. But again, he was dependent on circumstances, just like all of us are. I feel for Luke.”The Lakers improved their record in each of Walton’s three seasons, but never finished higher than third place in the Pacific Division. The current Lakers were the franchise’s most successful team since their playoff drought began in 2013, but it wasn’t enough to save Walton’s job.“I think Luke did a hell of a job with what he had, the cards he was dealt,” point guard Rajon Rondo said. “The guys fought every night.”Los Angeles was in fourth place in the Western Conference at 20-14 after beating Golden State last Christmas, but James and Rondo were injured during the game. Federal beer tax means Canadians will pay two per cent more

first_imgJohn Papas owns a beer and wine store in Calgary’s southeast and says the escalator tax being used by the Liberal government is impacting his bottom line. The federal government’s escalator tax on beer was introduced last year in the 2017 budget. Finance Minister Bill Morneau implemented the tax last year to match inflation, after there was no increase in the country for thirty years. Beer Canada is calling on Canadians to sign their petition in an effort to scrap the tax. He says this is affecting the bottom line of his membership and cost beer lovers nearly $15 million last year. “This year, on April the first, with this escalator tax going up automatically, they’ll take another $10.5 million dollars out of the pockets of Canadians,” said Harford.center_img It means taxes on Canada’s favourite suds increased by about 2 per cent and it will continue to increase on an annual basis. “You might think one or two per cent isn’t a lot but, over a period of time along with the provincial taxes that continue to increase, it has dramatically increased the price of like a regular six pack on the shelf,” said Papas. Thousands have already signed Beer Canada’s petition and according to the organization Canada has one of the highest taxation rates on alcohol in the world. President Luke Harford calls it runaway taxation adding that taxes on a bottle of beer are already 47 per cent.last_img read more
