Fantasy Injury Updates: JuJu Smith-Schuster, Auden Tate, Phillip Dorsett affect Week 12 WR rankings

first_imgThe Week 12 WR rankings might be missing JuJu Smith-Schuster, who sustained a concussion on Thursday night. Two of our favorite sleepers, Auden Tate and Phillip Dorsett, also were hit in the head and knocked out of their respective games Sunday. That means that three players with some fantasy football relevance heading into Week 12 could be late-week decisions based on how long their recoveries take, and it could open the door for other wide receivers on their respective teams to be popular waiver pickups and sleepers. For updates on Marlon Mack and James Conner, go here; for news on Devonta Freeman, Jordan Howard, and Saquon Barkley, go here; for the latest on banged-up WRs, such as Will Fuller, T.Y. Hilton, Tyler Lockett, and more, click here; for updates on injured TEs George Kittle, Evan Engram, and Austin Hooper, go here. Follow us for more news and updates on Twitter @SN_Fantasy. Phillip Dorsett injury statusDorsett caught a touchdown in the third quarter Sunday, and on the same play he took a blow to the head. Dorsett didn’t return to the game after that play. N’Keal Harry saw more action after Dorsett left the game and caught three-of-four targets.WEEK 12 DFS LINEUPS: FD cash | FD GPP | DK cash | DK GPP | Y! cash | Y! GPPHarry would fit into the same role of a boom-or-bust FLEX play as Dorsett if the veteran was forced to miss time. The New England offense still runs through Julian Edelman and the RBs for the most part, though, so Harry isn’t a priority pickup. WEEK 12 NON-PPR RANKINGS:Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | KickerJuJu Smith-Schuster injury updateSmith-Schuster took two shots to the helmet on the same play Thursday night and was forced from the game with a concussion. Smith-Schuster also spent time in concussion protocol during the 2017 season. (Update: JuJu also injured his knee on that same play, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, though the extent of the injury is unknown.)The ideal situation would be that 10 days off would allow JuJu to be ready for Week 12, but concussions are also tricky business, so we probably won’t know until late in the week. JuJu has been a disappointment this season. If he and Diontae Johnson (who was also concussed) both missed Week 12, James Washington would be in play against the Bengals.MORE WEEK 12:Waiver pickups | FAAB planner | Stock watch | Snap counts | Fantasy playoff SOSAuden Tate injury newsTate sustained a scary injury Sunday when a hit bent his neck at an awkward angle. The Bengals’ wideout remained on the ground for five-plus minutes before trainers loaded him onto the medical board and carted him off. Tate did hold two thumbs up as he was carted off.(Update: Tate suffered a concussion and cervical strain and is in the league’s concussion protocol.)This looked like an injury that will force Tate to miss time. One of our favorite sleepers all season, Tate can probably be safely dropped in fantasy leagues. Alex Erickson likely steps into Tate’s No. 2 WR role in Cincinnati for Week 12, although John Ross (clavicle) can return from Injured Reserve in Week 13 to knock Erickson back down the pecking order. It might be time to stash Ross.WEEK 12 PPR RANKINGS: Running back | Wide receiver | Tight endlast_img read more

Two Girls Mysteriously Found Dead

first_imgTwo little girls, aged six and nine, were last Saturday  mysteriously found dead in the Nimba County town of Lowlay, Gbehlay Geh District.Police sources, who begged anonymity because they had no authority to speak on the matter, told this newspaper that on Friday 20th June, 2014, the two little girls, upon their school closing for the academic year 20013/2014, left for their farm which some kilometers from Lowlay town. After they had left, their parents returned late in the evening from the farm and began asking for their whereabouts, but they were told that the children had  earlier left for the farm upon the closing of school. While in search for the  children, they were mysteriously found dead lying 25 yards apart in the swamp around the location of their village. The two little girls; Jacqueline Wowoah, 9, and Jestina Wowoah, 6, were said to have been children of the same mother and father. The mysterious death of these little girls brought great fear among the citizens of Lowlay Town where the incident occurred. The Police Crime Services Department Commander in Nimba, Detective James Kartoe, confirmed the incident and explained that several persons were picked up as suspects and are undergoing investigation. He said foul play was suspected, and so the police was still investigating the matter.Unconfirmed reports reaching the Daily Observer suggest  that, one of the victims, six year-old Jestina, was found with a broken hand. There is a speculation that the deaths were linked to ritualistic killing, as the 2014 special legislative election approaches, but this is yet to be verified as police continue their investigation.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Airlines get options for bad weather

first_imgWASHINGTON – With a record number of flights expected this summer, the Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday that it would expand the use of a strategy to minimize weather-related delays in air traffic. The strategy, called the airspace flow program, allows airlines to choose between flying longer routes to avoid stormy weather or accepting delays that are aggravating for travelers and costly for the industry. “If your flight isn’t scheduled to fly through bad weather, you don’t have to sit on the tarmac,” FAA Administrator Marion Blakey said in a written statement. “If it is, your airline has the choice of taking a delay … or flying around the storm.” The program was introduced last year in seven high-air-traffic regions in the Northeast, reducing delays due to bad weather by 9 percent, the FAA said. This summer the program will be used in 18 regions, including parts of the South and Midwest. The FAA, which developed the program with input from industry representatives, estimated that the program would save $100 million per year in reduced costs for airlines and the public. Sid McGuirk, associate professor of air-traffic management at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., credited the FAA for its pragmatic approach to maintaining high safety standards, while addressing the complaints of airlines and corporate jets whose owners felt that many flights were being grounded unnecessarily. “In years past, they’ve erred on the side of caution, and the users have been screaming,” McGuirk said. “This is a cautious move toward allowing the users to access the system in a way that doesn’t overload the system and doesn’t create a dangerous situation.” However, a union, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, says a shortage of air traffic controllers will make summer delays inevitable. “You’ve got to have more controllers,” said Doug Church, spokesman for the controllers union, which is seeking to restart stalled negotiations on a new contract. “They’re going to be working tired.” So far this year, Blakey said, U.S. carriers are off to a tough start, with flight delays up by 13 percent between January and April. The FAA’s actions came as the Air Transport Association, the airline industry’s main trade group, forecast that a record number of airline passengers would fly during the Memorial Day holiday weekend and throughout the summer. For a 10-day period around Memorial Day, the association predicts, 21.4 million passengers worldwide will travel on U.S. airlines, up 3.3 percent from last year. Between June and August, the association forecasts, there will be 209 million passengers, up 3 percent from last year. James May, the group’s president, said airlines “are maximizing their efforts to ensure that operations run smoothly for our customers.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Understanding fertilizer numbers

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Agronomy professionals can talk all day about a variety of the technical aspects involved in farming and growing crops. And many of them do, even me, or so I’ve been told. And when doing so, most assume that the audience is up to speed on the basics on which the talks are built. But that is not always the case. Recently I was talking with some growers and dealers about the analysis of a blend of fertilizer products, when I realized that there was some confusion on what exactly those numbers meant.Look at any bag, jug or fertilizer label, and you will see three numbers separated by hyphens. These numbers represent nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content. Some fertilizers have more than three numbers, and in those cases the extra numbers represent other nutrients. It doesn’t matter if it is liquid or dry fertilizer, as the numbers represent the percent by weight of each nutrient the product contains.Where it gets a little complicated is with the second and third numbers which represent not just potassium and phosphorous, but the oxides of those elements. This goes back in time to when fertilizers were heated with air to convert the phosphate and potassium to oxides — specifically P2O5 and K2O — and these numbers were used for the nutrient analysis. (This was referred to as Gravimetric Analysis.) While modern analytical techniques are used to determine fertilizer analysis today, the numbers are still in terms of the oxides for historical continuity. But these oxides themselves are never found in fertilizer. So it’s kind of like the American system of using miles and acres instead of kilometers and hectares — it’s hard to change.Ok, let’s put this knowledge to work. The words written on a label for the elements of the three numbers are: total nitrogen — available phosphate – soluble potash. Remember these numbers are for percent by weight so it is easy for dry materials. One hundred pounds of 18-46-0 dry fertilizer has 18 pounds of total nitrogen (0.18 x 100 pounds), 46 pounds of available phosphate (0.46 x 100 pounds) and 0 pounds of soluble potash (0 x 100 pounds). If you have a blend of equal amounts of 18-46-0 and 0-0-60, then the resulting blend would have an analysis of 9-23-30. You just take the proportion of each times the analysis and add together. Since the blend is half of each fertilizer product, the new analysis is 0.5 times the analysis numbers. Then add them together. If the blended product is 75% 18-46-0 and 25% 0-0-60, then take 0.75 times 18-46-0 and 0.25 times 0-0-60 and add together, which is 13.5-34.5-15. Fertilizer rules according to the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials (AAPFCO) allow for the nitrogen number to be listed as 14%. This would be applicable if this blend is to be sold commercially.Dry product calculations are easy. But what about blends of liquids that have different weights per gallon? That can be a challenge, but it’s easy once you read on. Question: what is the analysis of a fertilizer blend that is 75% 9-24-3 and 25% 20-0-0 UAN? First examine the 9-24-3 label:According to the label, this product weighs 11.2 pound per gallon. By multiplying the nutrient percentages (9% nitrogen, 24% phosphate and 3% potash) by this weight we find that each gallon contains: 1 pound of nitrogen, 2.7 pounds of phosphate and 0.3 pound of potash. For blends of liquids, let us do the math for one gallon of the blend. Since the blend is 75% 9-24-3, it is necessary to multiply the amounts of nutrients in a gallon of the product times 75%. This gives 0.75 pound nitrogen, two pounds phosphate and 0.225 pound potash. And 0.75 gallon would weigh 8.4 pounds (0.75 x 11.2 pounds per gallon.) Now we have the necessary numbers for the 9-24-3 part of the blend. Now we will do the same for the other product in the blend, which is 20-0-0.This product weighs 10.53 pounds per gallon. It also says it contains 2.11 pounds of nitrogen per gallon, saving us a multiplication step (which would be 20% or 0.2 x 10.53). The blended product is 25% 20-0-0. That gives 0.5275 pound of nitrogen (25% or 0.25 x 2.11). The weight of this product in the 25% blended product is 2.6325 pounds (0.25 x 10.53). Now we have the contributions from both of the products in the blend. It’s time to put it together. Putting it togetherWeight of a gallon of this blend: 8.4 (75% 9-24-3) + 2.635 (25% 20-0-0) = 11.035 pounds per gallon.Weights of N: 0.75 (from 9-24-3) + 0.5275 (from 20-0-0) = 1.2775 pounds –nitrogen per gallon.Weights of P2O5 and K2O are only from the 9-24-3: 2 and 0.225 pound per gallon, respectively. These are weights that must be converted to percentages, which is how labels are expressed. So divide these numbers by the weight of the new blended product, 11.035.N: 1.2775/11.035 = 0.116, or 11.6% N. Now according to AAPFCO fertilizer label rules, we can call this 12%.Phosphate: 2/11.035 = 0.18 or 18% P2O5.Potash: 0.225/11.035 = 0.02 or 2% K2O.So the new blended product would have an analysis of 12-18-2. Now there are certainly various other math or computer program pathways to this answer, but this is how it can be determined by hand. This is the percentage of nitrogen, phosphate and potash nutrients in an applied rate of fertilizer. The same process would apply to other nutrients such as sulfur that are on the label. To figure actual pounds per acre applied: multiply the number of gallons per acre times the weight per gallon (in this case 11.035) to get pounds per acre of product applied. Then multiply this number times the percentages of nutrients, in decimal form. This is actual pounds of nutrients applied per acre. Some products are promoted as being higher efficiency formulations to give increased nutrient on an equivalent basis. But those numbers are often based on a plant response and are not actual pounds of nutrients.last_img read more

Review: The Illuminati — A Hands-Free Light Meter

first_imgThere are many benefits to having a light meter. There are even more benefits to a light meter that is also a color meter you can read on your phone. This year at NAB, I came across a booth for a company called Illuminati. They were not a secret underground organization trying to impose a new world order — as their name might suggest — but rather a nice group of folks who have created what just might be my favorite new light/color meter. After a very successful kickstarter campaign, the Illuminati light meter has been out for a bit now, and it works great. I hadn’t heard of it myself until I found them at NAB, and let me be clear, this is not a sponsored post. I bought one for myself about 30 seconds in as they were explaining its functionality to me.At a price point well below most of the competition (usually in the $500 range — or much higher), with both a color meter and an incident-style light meter, this was too good to pass up.This particular meter has a very interesting form factor. I’m not sure how intentional the triangle shape was in relation to the company’s name, but the humor is not lost on me. However, the shape is actually quite functional. The meter itself is made of plastic and features a few little LEDs that flash to signify a successful bluetooth pairing (and other various bits of information). However, you can turn this light off if you don’t want it affecting your shot.A nice little magnetic kickstand comes with the meter — as well as a magnetic back that you can use to attach the device to your shirt or a lanyard. Both are very strong and work great. My favorite aspect of this little light meter is that you can leave it in the scene as you light. I tend to work as a one- or two-man band most of the time, and this device allows me to alter my light intensities and contrast ratios while looking at my phone and dialing in the exact look that I want. Of course, being able to do this without walking back and forth and taking readings is a great thing. The AppThe app has a great dashboard-type screen where you can add or remove meters based on the information that you’d like to see. All at once, you can keep tabs on a video light exposure meter, stills-style light exposure meter, color temperature, and chromaticity. You can even set an alarm in this screen. Each of these will update simultaneously based on the light hitting the meter. You can easily switch between a stills exposure meter or a video exposure meter with the touch of a button. This will switch between a shutter speed readout or a shutter angle readout. In the video meter, you can also change the frame-rate, as well as add ND filter amounts. All of this is super helpful.Perhaps my favorite part of the app is the remarkable color temperature meter. This addition to an already-affordable meter was the main selling point for me.The meter gives you a graph of the current color temperature of your light. However, it also contains presets of nearly every major lighting gel company that will provide new nodes on the graph, showing you what change in color temperature would result from using that particular gel.  For instance, you’ll know how far a full CTB (color temperature blue) will push your light before you ever put it on the light itself. The app also includes chromaticity, which is a great tool for measuring the quality of the light hitting the meter. Now you no longer need to rely on camera tests and manufacturer information to tell you the lux and footcandles of the lights that you’re using. You can also keep track of the magenta and green shift. No more fretting over CRI. You’ll know exactly how to correct your lights for magenta or green shift. If you’re in the market for a light meter, I strongly suggest this one — especially if you’re just learning how and why to use them and you want something good to start with. However, this meter is a great option for beginners and experts alike. So far, it seems to do everything I need a light meter to do — with the added benefits bluetooth-capability and a robust color meter.Looking for more industry news?
